Director, Quality Engineering

Created the QE and Release Engineering team for a small startup company, TradingDynamics. Managed all aspects of quality assurance and release management for release 1.0 and later releases of the MarketSuite product for business-to-business dynamic trading (online auctions). TradingDynamics was acquired by Ariba in January 2000 for $700 million. At Ariba, I managed quality assurance and the release process for multiple releases of the highly-successful Ariba Strategic Sourcing product which is used by many Fortune 100 companies.

Managed engineering for a research project involving data broadcasting via satellite and cable. Worked with 3rd-party software developers to successfully implement a field test of data broadcasting via the DirecTV/USSB satellite.

Reported to President and CEO of this private startup, a spin-off of Paul Allen's Interval Research Corporation, developing products (in C++, Java, CORBA) for Internet publishing. Created and managed the QE team, product lifecycle standards, and project management standards.

  • Co-managed development team with company founder, providing greatly needed leadership during difficult times.
  • Defined realistic project goals, schedules, and processes, resulting in on-time project milestones.
  • Implemented internal project management web site, resulting in thorough communication of project plans, schedules, status, risks, and other project information.
  • Developed strong communication and cooperation between the QE and development teams, resulting in an outstanding rate of bug resolution.
  • Developed full suite of test specs and automation, with ability to perform full systems test within one day.

Reported to VP of Technology. Created and implemented QA practices, software development processes, and project management standards for this private startup company doing business through its Web site. Oversaw the testing of 2 new client/server applications and 2 complete revisions of the large TuneUp.com Web site. Left the company when it was acquired by Quarterdeck/Symantec.

NetManage Inc., Cupertino, Calif.
Director of Software Quality Assurance

Reported to the VP of Engineering and managed 5 QA team leaders, the Engineering Services manager, and the Integration/Build team, with 34 engineers in my department.

  • Organized QA into product-line teams, creating focus and leadership, which did not exist before my arrival.
  • Established and implemented the QA mission of pre-release testing. When I joined NetManage, QA engineers were spending most of their time assisting Technical Support and MIS.
  • Created a Customer Test Partner program, providing beta site product testing feedback directly into engineering.
  • Established an Engineering Escalations team for the resolution of critical customer problems escalated by Sales and Tech Support, resulting in millions of dollars in sales that would not have been achieved otherwise.
  • Recruited and hired 18 engineers over a 17-month period.
  • Managed the build, test, and release of over 30 software products in the first 3 months of 1996.

Lotus cc:Mail, Mountain View, Calif.
Director of Software Quality Engineering

Held various director-level positions at overlapping times, including Director of QE, Technical Support, and Internal Systems and Support (ISS). Reported to General Manager, cc:Mail. Joined cc:Mail Inc. when it was a 35-employee private company and was one of the senior managers that led cc:Mail through its acquisition by Lotus Development and its 1000% growth. Responsible for all software QE, release engineering, customer problem escalations, customer beta programs, and at times, all customer support and internal networks and internal support.

  • Built QE organization from 0 to 50 engineers and contractors.
  • Created the cc:Mail product development process, creating order from chaos in cross-organization projects and scheduling. My process was adopted by all of Lotus as the Lotus standard software development lifecycle.
  • Created cc:Mail Professional Services (on-site support), from business plan through operation as a cc:Mail profit center. My business plan was used for the creation of the Lotus Field Service and Support organization.
  • Created cc:Mail's bug tracking database which was used as the model for the Lotus-wide bug database, replacing 7 different bug databases within Lotus.
  • Oversaw multiple releases of over 35 separate award-winning and market-leading products.
  • Accurately planned and managed an annual budget of $7 million.
  • Completely revamped the 'garage-shop' internal network to a fast and reliable system.
  • Recruited excellent engineers and managers, and participated in selecting other directors and vice presidents.

3Com Corporation; Santa Clara, Calif.
Manager, Software Quality Engineering

Managed 6 QE engineers and was QE technical lead on 8 projects. Oversaw all quality aspects of major network OS products such as 3+, 3+Open LAN Manager, and 3+Open Macintosh. Managed software testing for several new 3Com server platforms. Created and managed an annual budget of $800,000. Served as cross-organization product team leader for TCP/IP product, coordinating multiple organizations, external developers, and OEM's. Multiple recipient of 3Com Top-20% Award for management.

QA project leader for all application software on new AT&T UNIX PC until released. Initiated and led QA testing of DOS, UNIX, and all application software for a new network server. Programmed (in C) automated tests for many UNIX subsystems, including VT100 terminal emulation, UNIX system calls, and RS232 drivers.

Self-employed Owner: Video and home computer retail business

Started from scratch and managed total business operation, including accounting, advertising, budgeting, and hiring. Grew business to 4 employees. Built annual revenue to over $300,000 with continuous debt-free operation, and sold business for 3 times original investment.

Built and managed 11-engineer team for design and development of Office Management System (OMS), a successful product sold for many years. Designed and programmed the 2 best-selling applications for Burroughs small business computers (CMS Reporter, CMS Domain). Programmed developer tools as a member of the state-of-the-art Generative Techniques and Tools engineering team.
