Gillies Leads Michigan to Wins vs. Big East Competition

TAMPA, Fla. -- Junior pitcher Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) posted a shutout and save as the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan softball team beat St. John's University (5-0) and Providence College (4-1) in a pair of single games Tuesday afternoon (March 2) in Tampa, Fla.

Gillies recorded a trio of firsts for the day. She posted her first win (1-2) and shutout of the year with the 5-0 complete-game decision vs. St. John's, then came back in the second game to record her first career save in relief of starter Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS). Barda picked up her season-first win (1-1) with a five-hit, one-run effort over five and one-third innings vs. the Friars. Gillies held St. John's to three hits while recording three strikeouts and no walks. She entered the Providence game with one out and two runners on in the sixth, getting the final two outs of the inning and the save.

Michigan (7-5) powered 19 hits, including six doubles, over the two games against the Big East Conference duo. Catherine Davie (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) collected three doubles, including two vs. Providence, to lead the Wolverines' extra-base hit attack. Davie finished the day with four hits, two RBI and four runs scored.

Melissa Taylor (Deerfield, Mich./Summerfield HS) was a perfect 3-for-3 against St. John's while Tammy Mika (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) went 2-for-3. Davie, Traci Conrad (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way HS) and Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) each had two hits vs. Providence.

The Wolverines resume tournament play Thursday through Sunday at the Speedline Invitational, hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa. Michigan faces Florida Atlantic University (noon) and the University of Georgia (2 p.m.) in Thursday's (March 4) schedule.
