Back-to-Back Shutouts Extend U-M Unbeaten Streak

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- No. 8-ranked Michigan flexed its softball muscles and posted a pair of five-inning, 11-0 shutout victories vs. Indiana State and Loyola (Ill.) in day-one action at the Purdue Boilermaker Classic Saturday (March 27). The Wolverines (27-5-1) extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games (18-0-1). U-M completes Boilermaker Classic play Sunday morning with games against Bradley (9 a.m.) and No. 25 Central Michigan (11 a.m.).

Junior pitcher Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) paced the defensive half of Michigan's opening win, tossing a one-hitter against Indiana State. Gillies (6-2) notched one strikeout and allowed three walks.

On the offensive side, Michigan jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then added four runs in both the second and third innings to cruise to its second win over the Sycamores in a week. Catherine Davie (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) drilled a triple and Tammy Mika (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) a double for Michigan's only extra-base hits. Davie, Mika, Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) and Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) were each 2-for-3 at the plate.

Against Loyola, the Wolverines again used a big first inning to set the winning tone, scoring five runs on four hits in its first batting cycle. Davie tallied the Wolverines' only extra-base hit, sending a leadoff double to center field in the fourth. Davie, Kosanke and Mika had two hits apiece to lead the 11-hit U-M offense.

Freshman Kate Eiland (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) moved her record to 10-2, allowing no walks while giving up eight hits to the Ramblers.

Maize 'n Blue Diamond Gems

  • Pitcher Jamie Gillies recorded her fourth straight win in as many starts with her 11-0 victory vs. Indiana State. During the win streak, the junior has thrown three shutouts to raise her season shutout total to four.

  • The last time Michigan posted back-to-back shutout wins was late in the 1998 regular season when it put together three consecutive shutouts vs. Wisconsin (4-0 on May 2) and Iowa (7-0 and 6-0 on April 25). The U-M record for consecuitve shutouts is six games in the 1996 season.

  • Michigan kept its all-time record vs. Indiana State unblemished with Saturday's win. The Wolverines are 3-0 against the Sycamores and have allowed no runs in the series, outscoring ISU 26-0. . . . Michigan met Loyola for the first time on the softball diamond.
