The Haven Family Line
From Richard Haven (b. 1620) to Matt Haven (b. 1987)

In 1952, Keith Hoffmaster of Santa Ana, California completed a genealogy project that identified the family ancestry line, the primary family members in that line, and other data and notes seen here. He also compiled similar information for the Wilmot and Goodell family lines which joined the Haven family line through marriage in generations V and VII below.

Keith wrote the following:
Sources of Information for this Genealogy

"History of the Haven Family, also Reports of the Family Reunions, commencing with that of 1895," published by the Press of W. W. Sherwood, Garretsville, Ohio, 1896.

"History of the Goodell Family and Report of the Haven Reunion for 1896," published by the Peirce Printing Co., Garretsville, Ohio, 1897.

In 1952 one copy of each of the above booklets is in possession of A. B. Haven, San Onofre, Calif. and one copy each is held by Keith M. Hoffmaster, 2239 Rousselle, Santa Ana, Calif.

A handwritten copy of the will of Richard Haven (1620(?) - 1703) in the possession of A. B. Haven, said copy thought to have been made by Lucia Haven Taylor under the direction of Edwin M. Haven sometime before 1910.

Outline of the Wilmot and Tyler family in an envelope from John M. Haven, Bloomingdale, Mich. addressed to Edwin M. Haven, Tustin, Calif., postmarked Aug. 28, 1913. This reference is in coarse pencil writing on unglazed scratch paper, in the possession of A.B. Haven in 1952.

Memory, interviews with A. B. Haven, Amy Haven Hoffmaster, L. S. Haven, letters from Lucia Haven Taylor.
In 2004, I transcribed Keith Hoffmaster's data to this HTML Web page. While doing so, I used numerous Web sites to identify and add dates and persons that were missing from Keith's "Haven Family Line". Where I was able to, I completed the lists of all the children for each family, and added the names of all grandchildren. I also noticed, however, that much of Keith's information was not available on any Web site. So I hope other Haven family researchers will find this newly-published data useful for their investigations. -- Bob Haven (Robert W. Haven, Generation XI below), Dec. 3, 2004

that time it was thought that consumption, or
tuberculosis, was caused by disappointed love.

John died suddenly in Apr 1923 at his ranch near
Bloomingdale, Michigan while making maple syrup.
Hattie died Nov 1923 of stroke, while gathering apples

    Notes:

George attended the district school, academy at the "Center"
(probably Shalersville Center), then the Eclectic Institute
at Hiram, Ohio (now Hiram College) where future President
James A. Garfield was a fellow student.

The "History of the Haven Family" book includes this
        interesting note:
"George, by the way, had a comely sister, fair of feature,
and possessed of many womanly graces, and to whom Pres.
Garfield in his school days paid marked attention, often
accompanying her at the close of the week to her home in
Shalersville, where we would spend the Sabbath. But we find
in this instance, as in most others, that loveliness is of a
fragile nature, that things most beautiful are most
perishable. She too fell victim to that insidious disease,
consumption, and died at the age of nearly twenty years."

After marrying Lucia Wilmot, George and Lucia lived in North
Eaton, Ohio for several years. Then they moved to
Bloomingdale, Michigan, where they purchased a farm and
where they lived the rest of their lives.

Engaged in the seed business in connection with farming.
Transferred the business to eldest son Edwin in later years.

[Keith Hoffmaster's info ended here, so I am still in the process of
completing the remainder. I'll enlist the help of my dad,
Robert E. Haven, and have it finished fairly soon.]

Edwin started the Haven Seed Company in 1875 in Bloomingdale,
        Michigan.

In 1891, Edwin and Ludema moved to South Haven, Mich., where
he built up his wholesale seed trade.

Edwin moved his family to California in the autumn of 1903.
They settled for a season in San Luis Obispo County. From
1905 to 1909, they operated in San Joaquin and Stanislaus
counties, and in 1910 they moved to Tustin in Orange
County, where they created a seed farm.

The Haven Seed Company continued to thrive after Edwin's
death, and became one of Orange County's leading industries
        in the early twentieth century.
